SOCIETY OF THORACIC SURGEONS As Mother Nature raged elsewhere, the skies were clear in Tampa where members of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons flocked for the group's 41st annual meeting last month. Research highlights focused on new and emerging therapeutic techniques for coronary disease, lung cancer and congenital heart disease, some of which found newer procedures are not necessarily better than traditional predecessors. Though minimally invasive, catheter-based techniques are becoming more common, in some cases classic surgery is still the gold standard.
